Social Media Events - The Ups and Downs

In my previous post, I listed out a couple of social media events that are/were happening this week and beyond.

Tonight I attended Web Wednesday 12.0 and was quite disappointed. Having been informed that I would get “a scintillating look at some interesting digital measurement data and insights, hopefully both for mobile and the web”, I was really hoping to have a great presentation on metrics and means of understanding user online behaviour. Unfortunately, it just ended up being a sales pitch style presentation by Will Hodgman, Executive VP for International and M:Metrics for ComScore.

*Wonderful insights* tonight included:

a. Asia Pacific is the fastest growing in terms of Internet and mobile (Wow! Really? All this time I thought that yous Americans wuz the leaderz)

b. Future for mobile is better phones and faster connection speeds (No way… all my market data shows that Moore’s law is turning on its head and we should be going back to the “brick” and “briefcase” phones)

I guess that’s the thing with social media/new media nowadays. Everyone wants a piece of the action, but some really CMI. This extends to events as well. The only way is to refine your filters and make better selections of what to spend time on.

Right now, I’ve lost faith in Web Wednesday… I’d go for SMB anytime. At least they don’t promise the sky, but occassionally they do deliver beyond expectations.

Update: The slides are now on slideshare, so you can decide for yourself if it was worth attending.

  • I couldn’t help laughing when I read points (a) and (b)! Normally you appear so restrained and cool. Your sarcasm shows how disappointed you are! BTW, I thought what’s Web 2.0 about the conference is that you’re blogging about it. Speakers who don’t make the cut might just be blogged about. Those who do might earn themselves more positive word of mouth. BTW, what’s CMI ah?

    I think I’d rather blog about speakers that do make the cut! ;p

    CMI = Cannot Make It.

  • Whenever I see hype words like “scintillating” in the writeup and when the speaker has “Executive” or “VP” in their title, my CMI-dar starts beeping.

    Thanks for the review – I’m sure glad I couldn’t make it :)

    I need to hone my CMI-dar! Oh well, I don’t mind being the lab rat for social media events.
