65bits – Lessons after 94 episodes

Background on Tech 65

A team of geeks passionate about technology – help people learn about technology through podcasts through blogs – sharing their knowledge.

65bits is one of the podcasts that Tech 65 has. Idea is a bunch of geeks coming together to discuss about tech stuff happening.

They’re going to do live recording of 65bits!

Got a surround sound microphone so that listeners can distinguish voices in the space.

Things they’ve learnt:

1. Content is king – started out because they loved geeking out, hanging out talking about technology

important to be interested in the content you talk about, can’t be a script that someone else wrote, otherwise not sustainable

Length – 10 mins is desirable – they’ve not been able to achieve that so they do show notes which has timestamps for topics. The ideal option was Apple’s enhanced podcast but they wanted to keep things broader

Podcast.sg sort of diluted the meaning of podcasts – sort of confused the uninitiated

Melvin asked what the community do to help Tech 65

Daniel “One of the challenges – balancing personal life and tech 65 side project”

Publicity – fundamental issue is “not enough people understand the concept of podcasting, consuming podcasts as a concept”

Their purpose is to make people less afraid of technology.

Discussion of challenges of podcasting

One of the challenges is technology

The other thing is the lack of ideas, creativity, talent, ability to engage the audience – Walter

The ability to script for audio/radio – Melvin – radio has the ability to engage the imagination

2. Jumpstarting (Secret to 65bits sustainability)

Once its a habit, it’s easier to maintain – momentum carried them forward

Walter asked a question that was asked at the DMFest continually – “How do you make money out of this?”

The only payment is the joy of doing it. Previously loss track because of the money issue. DK – when you start anything web 2.0, don’t think about money first, make it sustainable first, then think about money.

Analogy is like a rock band.

3. Lessons learnt about our audience – Singaporeans don’t really contribute – shy maybe? or they like to complain?

2008 – impact of social media

What’s ahead for 2009? Melvin’s take

80% web services going to face pressure to bring in revenue

Poorly run services will die off

Good web services will remain

more collaboration between agencies – sharing of information

Social media in Singapore has changed our lives in 2008

Doors have opened, thru blogs secured jobs, thru social networks

Social Media – The Good, The Bad and the “Boh Liao”

The Good

Friendships

Empowerment – new channels

Collaboration

The Bad

Loss of privacy

Inability of knowing the dangers of being online

The Boh Liao

Should I continue Plurking? Stay online to raise karma

Pressure to keep existing online – just because we need to

Preston Fosback (?spelling?) ustream obama sign – in few days 40,000 users 24/7 surveillance

There’s alot more to social media than we now realise. What are we going to do with social media in 2009?
